Temperament/Personality
Well according to the AKC Standard, the Siberian Husky "does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs." What that means is if you are looking for a guard dog, this would be the worst choice you can choose. Sibes are NOT GUARD DOGS!! If you want a dog that can guard your house from intruders, look for either a german shepherd or belgian shepherd. Okay, their exotic, wolf-like appearance makes Huskies appealing to many people, and their even temperament, love of other dogs and indifference to strangers makes them ideal family dogs. They may look fierce to the unsuspecting. They may seem like a good family dog for first time dog owners, but Huskies can often be “too much dog” for a novice. They require extensive training and exercise in order maintain good behavior and only those with the time and energy to fully commit to a Husky should take on this breed. But Husky owners agree, you get out of a Siberian Husky what you put into him, and these reliable dogs are worth the effort.
Activities and Training Requirements
Alright, sibes needs a lot of exercise to keep them calm and also to keep them healthy. They are working dogs, not dogs that will sit around and just sleep. Well they actually do sleep a lot when they are tired, so keeping them busy is a good thing to do if you don't want them destroying your house, plants and furnitures. Siberian huskies enjoy running beside you while you go for your morning run, running beside you while you cycle. In general they love to run! So always keeping them on leads/leash may be a really good idea. The way they play is not like other dogs, they will wrestle each other to the ground. Hair standing with teeth showing and play biting each other with no stop. For the normal dog owners they might think its bad and dangerous for them to do so, but if you've lived with them long enough you won't even care about it anymore because they are just having a lot of fun.
Husky Owners will tell you an obedience class is always a waste of time because they have the ability to perform and listen extremely well and be the top student in their class but when they return home, it's like they never went to an obedience class before. They will revert to their old ways. They are really hard to train so they are not for first time dog owners. They require strict and firm leadership from you or they might just be your boss. They have a pack mentality, so basically to be the "ALPHA DOG" you need to be really firm with them. You must set rules and boundaries constantly to keep them "Trained."
Behavioural Traits
Because of this breed's popularity and the way they look, this breed had a tendency to be overbred by backyard breeders and pet shops. So what that means is that many huskies are being born into uneven temperaments. When adopting or buying a husky, one might need to do extensive research of the parents of the husky. Do make sure you ask to see the parents of the puppy before buying from any breeders. Here at Aleskin Siberians, we will provide you a chance to see the parents of the puppy you want to buy from us. Well bred huskies should never show any aggressive traits or being overly shy. Oh and by the way, huskies are escape artist or you can call them disappearing artist, they can climb over fence, dig under a fence, open doors, opening their crates and also running away from you. So please keep them supervised at all times!!!
Always keep them on leads/leashes because they have the tendency of chasing after any small animals and especially cats because they have that primitive instinct in them.
Coat care/Grooming
Siberian Huskies have a thick double coat of medium-length hair. Their undercoat is very dense, they do shed their coat really often. So weekly brushing is require if you want to keep you house fur free, well thats never fully possible if you have a siberian at home. They blow their coat twice a year, what that means is you already have a lot of fur at home daily but two months of the year you will have snow inside your house. They amount of fur they shed in that two months, will have you wonder what kind of alien you have at home. So you will need a good brush, comb and a blower, also throw in a good vacuum too!
Siberians are odor free if you can keep them dry, they don't have that strong dog smell you get from most other breeds. They are naturally clean, so basically they will clean themselves a lot. So bathing them is only when they really need it.
